Homeowners who fell behind on mortgage payments may be eligible to receive assistance under the Homeowners Assistance Fund (HAF).  The program will provide financial help to homeowners who missed mortgage and home insurance payments, or utility bills after January 21, 2020. To qualify, homeowners must:

  • Have faced pandemic-related financial hardship after January 21, 2020
  • Verify the nature of the hardship, such as job loss or increased healthcare costs
  • Have an income equal to or less than 150% of the area median income or 100% of the median income for the United States, whichever is greater (Find your area’s median income).

Created by the American Rescue Plan Act and administered by the U.S. Department of Treasury (Treasury) the fund will distribute a total of up to $10 billion to states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, Tribes or Tribal entities, and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. To receive funding, each eligible location was required to submit a detailed plan to Treasury that described the needs of homeowners within its area, plus how the plan would be implemented and managed. Currently, 10% of the total funding has gone out (this does not include Tribal data).
