The purpose of this audit was to provide information on the Department of Public Safety and Corrections’ (DOC) response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the correctional facilities it oversees. Overall, DOC faced multiple issues and challenges in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. DOC protocols complied with CDC guidance in the areas of testing, medical isolation, screening, visitation, personal protective equipment, social distancing, and transfers. However, it did not have processes to verify that correctional facilities implemented these protocols.

Representative John Barker requested this limited-scope audit, which was authorized by the Legislative Post Audit Committee at its February 24, 2021 meeting. Our audit objective was to answer the following question: How did causes of death during the COVID-19 pandemic compare to those before the pandemic? To answer this question, we reviewed death record data from 2019 and 2020 for the last third of each year (September 1 – December 31).

This special report examines and assesses the State of Delaware’s preparation of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) for the COVID-19 pandemic, both in the early stages of the pandemic and again six months later. This report builds on prior analyses and the results of a body of work published since the beginning of the pandemic to assess the role of the COVID-19 mitigation policy in reducing the impacts of COVID-19 on different populations across the United States and, specifically, in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

The purpose of this audit was to provide information on Louisiana’s response to COVID-19 in nursing facilities. We found that nursing facilities in Louisiana faced staffing challenges throughout the COVID-19 pandemic because of staff exposure to COVID-19, illness, or the need to care for family members.

We found that the State has met or exceeded targets for testing individuals for COVID‑19, but contact tracing throughout the State has lagged behind case surges that have far exceeded Public Health’s initial planning

Identifying patients who are at-risk of overdose or abuse is key to addressing this crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this need even more pressing. The National Institutes of Health recently warned that individuals with opioiduse disorder could be particularly hard hit by COVID-19, which is a respiratory virus that attacks the lungs. Respiratory disease is known to increase mortality risks among people taking opioids. This data brief would provide information on opioid utilization among beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Part D in 2020. 

This advisory report suggests actions the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS), Oregon Health Authority (OHA), and the Legislature can take to reduce illness and death from communicable diseases in nursing homes, assisted living, and residential care facilities, now and in the future.
